ACCOMMODATING and MULTIFOCAL INTRAOCULAR LENSES (PREMIUM IOL's)

One of the greatest advances in eye surgery is the continuing development of accommodating Multifocal Intraocular Lenses (Premium IOL’s).  Patients have increasingly more options for better eyesight in middle age than they’ve ever had in their lives.  The following guide will help you understand what Dr. Assil has to offer his patients.  Assil Eye Institute has counselors available to discuss your Premium IOL needs.

Conditions and candidates:

Nearsightedness: Also known as myopia, nearsightedness is the inability to see clearly at a distance. It is the result of an eye that is too long or the outside surface (the cornea) being too curved.

Farsightedness: Also known as hyperopia, farsightedness is the inability to see clearly up close. It is the result of an eye that is too short or the outside surface (the cornea) is too flat.

Presbyopia: Presbyopia is the cause for reading glasses. It usually begins affecting vision about age 40 for most people.  When a patient has presbyopia, the natural lens of the eye has lost its ability to “zoom.”  A result of being presbyopic is having to hold things farther away to read or a dependence on reading glasses or bifocals.

Cataracts: A cataract is a cloudy formation on the natural lens of the eye, gradually causing a reduction in clear vision.  Symptoms range from glare around headlights at night to needing more light when reading.

Benefits for the patient:

The procedure requires only local anesthesia (eye drops) and takes typically less than 10 minutes per eye to complete.

Precision placement of Premium IOL’s by Dr. Assil has regularly helped patients eliminate their dependence on reading and distance glasses alike.

Dr. Assil utilizes his personally developed algorithm to determine which particular Premium IOL is most likely to achieve the highest quality of vision for each patient.  This algorithm takes into account the existing shape of the person’s eye (eg. Corneal shape, pupil size and distance from the front surface to the retina) as well as the overall health of the eye (eg. Presence of other conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or diabetes.)

Return of visual function is rapid and most normal activities can be resumed the very next day.
