In traditional LASIK surgery, surgeons use a small instrument known as a microkeratome to cut a small flap in the cornea. Doctors believe the microkeratome may be responsible for the development of vision-compromising scars and irregular astigmatism, due to uneven flaps. To combat these, doctors use a new all laser LASIK technique called IntraLase.

All laser LASIK uses two lasers to complete the vision correction process. The first tool is an infrared laser which creates a smoother corneal flap. Doctors then follow-up with a standard LASIK laser to complete the vision correction part of the procedure. By combining these techniques, doctors may be able to drastically reduce potential complications caused by traditional LASIK surgery.
