Red Eye Syndrome

Red, bloodshot eyes are usually painless, but they are not very attractive. Redness occurs when blood vessels near the surface of the eye become enlarged and dilated. Red eyes have several causes, and it important to make an appointment with Dr. Assil to have the cause diagnosed.  Sometimes Red Eye is caused by Dry eye syndrome and it may be successfully treated using Dry Eye Light Impulse Therapy (DELIT).

Dry Eye Light Impulse Therapy (DELIT) is a revolutionary treatment that dramatically improves the symptoms of Dry Eye by increasing the natural production of the most commonly deficient tear component in Dry Eye patients, the oil layer.  DELIT is the application of Intense Pulse Light (IPL) to the lower eyelids where the glands that produce the oil are heated using a very bright Xenon flash lamp that projects very short pulses of intense light. IPL is used regularly to treat skin disorders including rosacea.  DELIT was developed when it was noticed (by ophthalmologist Dr. Rolando Toyos, formerly at the Assil Eye Institute) that IPL patients were noticing a dramatic reduction in dry eye symptoms.

Dr. Assil’s goal is to help his patients achieve a major improvement in the quality of their tears.  Typically this requires 3 to 4 DELIT treatments spaced one month apart, with most patients requiring a maintenance treatment once or twice a year.

A DELIT treatment takes 5 to 10 minutes and doesn’t hurt.  Symptoms of Dry Eye may start to improve as early as following the very first treatment. DELIT patients may also notice improvement of their facial skin complexion and texture.
