Assil Eye Institute Procedures

Dr. Kerry Assil of the Assil Eye Institute, Beverly Hills, CA., has created the “Custom Tailored LASIK Flap.” Having a Custom Tailored LASIK Flap means that the All Laser LASIK can now be customized for each patient on an individual basis. Working closely with the manufacturer “IntraLase,” Dr. Assil is able to customize flaps created by the IntraLase laser.

The benefits to this “custom tailored LASIK flap” include:

  • Less dry eye after LASIK.
  • Flaps that are “custom tailored” to conform to the natural anatomy of the eye. Therefore creating better visual optics, thus a better visual outcome. better visual optics, thus creating a better visual outcome.
  • People that have been told they were not candidates in the past may now be candidates with Dr. Assil’s new technology.
Initially, thorough pre-operative testing, including an evaluation of the health of the eye and computerized imaging of corneal shape and visual function (Dr. Kerry Assil was the first physician to assist in development of some of this technology), is conducted. Then, the LASIK procedure is performed in three steps:

Epi-LASIK - New Technology in Laser Vision Correction Dr. Kerry Assil, Medical Director of the Assil Eye Institute, was the first in California to use the EpiLift System, a new, safe method of corrective vision surgery, for correction of myopia (nearsightedness) and the first in the world for correction of hyperopia (farsightedness).

Corneal transplants (Penetrating Keratoplasty)At the Assil Eye Institute, corneal transplantation is a labor of love. We have helped people that for years had little to no vision, providing them with the gift of sight with less dependence on eye glasses or contact lenses. The Assil Eye Institute provides state-of-the-art technology in corneal transplantation, including post-transplant corneal laser sculpting (LASIK) if needed for further vision enhancement.

The WaveScan is a diagnostic device which gives the doctor a representation of your vision based on the behavior of light waves. This device compares the behavior of light passing through your eye to the behavior of light as it would pass through an ideal eye with error free imaging. The result is an in-depth representation of the refractive errors or aberrations present in your vision.WaveScan measures the refractive error of the eye with much greater precision and detail than a phoropter - with sphere and cylinder measured to within hundredths of a diopter.

Intra-ocular lens. Full-range vision and greater independence from glasses!New Technology: The ReZoom™ IOL (intra-ocular lens) is a second-generation refractive multifocal acrylic IOL that provides patients with greater independence from glasses, compared to traditional (monofocal) IOL’s. It features Balanced View Optics™ technology that distributes light over five optical zones for enhanced restoration of visual function, providing distance, computer and reading vision for increased independence from glasses. ReZoom™ lenses are so effective, 92 percent of its recipients never or seldom need to wear glasses again.

Dr. Assil has implanted thousands of intraocular lenses, including several hundred Verisyse Intraocular Lenses for patients enrolled in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Clinical Investigation - more than any other surgeon in the United States.Verisyse™ Phakic IOLThe Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is used to treat people with severe myopia and hyperopia; whose prescriptions generally fall beyond the parameters that LASIK can treat.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. The Assil Eye Institute has compiled this information to help you better understand them. What are cataracts? A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye. A normal lens is clear and lets light pass to the back of the eye. A cataract blocks some of the light. As a cataract develops, it becomes harder for a person to see.Symptoms of a cataract include: blurred driving or reading vision, sensitivity to light, glare, and halos around lights, change in glasses prescription and/or distorted images.

While LASIK corrects refractive errors of the cornea, a refractive lens exchange replaces the natural lens of your eye with an advanced multifocal intraocular lens (IOL), allowing for clear vision far away, up close and in between. Additionally, patients undergoing a refractive lens exchange procedure will maintain lens clarity as they age. Any secondary opacifications can be cleared up with a simple YAG laser treatment. Refractive lens exchange works best for patients who are hyperopic (farsighted) or myopic (nearsighted), and for whom LASIK is not a viable alternative. During the refractive lens exchange, a small incision is made at the edge of the cornea.
